CASE STUDIES

SOUTHERN AUTOMOTIVE AUCTION
2020

Wholesale Vehicle Auction Software

30-year-old legacy software modernization

Image of Dealer-Close-Out screen

"Dealer Close Out" UI I designed summarizing a dealers auction activity, and provides a total of fees for the day.

Image of SAFS Loan Calendar screen

"SAFS Loan Admin" I designed this screen for SAA's inhouse lending company summarizing loan activity for a single dealer.

Outcome

Clients team was impressed with my work for nearly 2 years.

Then COVID-19 arrived, and the brakes were put on the project.

$2M spent on fully custom business software.

Unable to see it to completion due to COVID-19.
Objectives

Prime objective was redesigning the software in order to modernize the running of weekly multi-million dollar auctions on a 30 year old legacy application from the ground up—0 to 1.

The existing software showed its age often requiring code patches to fix bugs, and no user experience with "MS-DOS like" screens

Establish an experience that takes into account any current analog process and determine if we can digitize it in some way—saving context switching time sucks.
Scenario

30+ year old, undocumented,
legacy software.

Siloed departments, legacy software largely undocumented—information is inside people's heads.

I was Lead UX Designer for the project with a team ranging in size from 4 to 14.
Actions Taken

Over two years, I redesigned an entire business system based on its existing (albeit aged) digital and analog processes.

Speaking to users in person to hear their pain points directly was invaluable, and a rare opportunity.

I excelled at cross-functional collaboration saving tens of thousands in costs because of my suite of soft-skills.

Screen capture of software screen

My workflow for distributors handling a patients case. No user experience existed for distributors to handle the workflow in the previous software.

Screen capture of software screen

My revised workflow for the patient's journey. The previous system only tracked indivdual eyes, not patients.

Outcome

My employer was awarded the software development project due to my exceptional quality of work I presented to our client contact and C-Suite executives.

My performance and deliverables left a lasting impression on them, leading to the successful acquisition of the full software development project for my employer at the time.
Objectives

The software running the weekly multi-million dollar auctions needed updating, and quickly.

It was beginning to show its age often requiring code patches to fix bugs.

Prime objective was redesigning and refactoring the entire legacy application from the ground up—0 to 1.

Make it modern and more efficient.
Scenario

The client is a global leader specializing in creating, producing, and promoting implantable lenses worldwide.

Unfortunately, their software system was outdated and ineffective, causing them to lose money as time passed.

To enhance their productivity and facilitate their development, they sought a new software solution that prioritized a patient-centric approach to lens management.
Actions Taken

  • Discovery Process
  • Define Users
  • Map Needs
  • Software Workflow
  • Redesign the User Experience and Interface
  • Online video interviews with the client and their staff
  • Understand their organizational structure and work processes
  • Design recommendations to their specific requirements

"Reimbursement Request" high-fidelity UX wireframe displaying the form to submit receipts for reimbursement from the surrogacy account.

"Client Document & Process" high-fidelity UX wireframe displaying tabs to move to different areas of the case, and toggle on this screen to indicate documents have been processed.

Image of Case Dashboard User Experience Design

"Case Timeline" high-fidelity UX wireframe displaying the calendar of events required to happen through the surrogacy process.

Outcome

At the outset, I was the lead designer on the team, and there was just one engineering lead as well.

We worked closely and cooperatively to create software that met our users' needs and aligned with their business goals.

I kept the developer apprised of the UX work as it was unfolding. It was a collaborative effort that allowed us to achieve our objectives seamlessly.
Objectives

The client provided us with multiple examples from different industries to consider.

Our main goal was to create the minimum viable project (MVP) as version 1.0 of the application.

To achieve this, we conducted research and analysis to determine user expectations and the most effective approach to handling sensitive personal healthcare information.

Scenario

Client dissatisfied with first UX Designer they worked with. I was brought in to save the project, and the client relationship

I worked with the client to take their application vision to a prototyped reality—from 0 to 1

I was the solo lead designer responsible for all design activities, including research.

The client had never worked with a professional software company, so there was a learning curve on their end.
Actions Taken

To understand the client's needs and preferences comprehensively, I conducted a series of online video interviews with the client and their staff.

This approach allowed me to delve deeper into their organizational structure and work processes, enabling me to tailor my design recommendations to their specific requirements.

Through a highly collaborative and iterative process, we achieved optimal design outcomes that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing—and met business objectives.
