Overview

Overview

I'm Bert, a designer living in and working from Ojai, California.

Professionally.

I help people and organizations create visual prototypes of ideas, promoting clear communication of concepts.

I design experiences and interfaces for software, websites, and mobile applications by listening to my collaborators, asking questions, and uncovering answers until things make sense.

I find that being an open-minded and impartial listener facilitates growth opportunities and has served me well throughout my career.

Independent and proactive, I have a strong work ethic, respect others, and have a sense of humor that I don't hide—It's essential not to take oneself too seriously.

Objectives.

Always keep learning, and sharing, while working amongst established colleagues and new talent. I know that looking to learn and grow is always rewarding. I also know that asking questions of colleagues when stuck is how you move forward. The key for me is problem-solving and contributing to the local and heftier goals.

Personal.

My first user experience was playing pong on a black & white television in the mid-70s.

My love of technology and design developed during the rise of video arcades in the early 1980s. These experiences influenced the direction of my life to where I am now.

Experience & Interface Designer

HamiltonBerchman LLC

Ojai, California

Jun 2005 — The present moment

I started consulting to help solve business communications challenges that arose from the emergence of the internet as a serious business tool.

I have worked on hundreds of Internet projects, including websites and analytics, email marketing, landing pages, video, and custom programming.   My work spans multiple industries, including technology, design, advertising, education, and working with many solo entrepreneurs.

I’ve managed many large projects remotely with clients and team members distributed worldwide.

User Experience & User Interface Designer

Art+Logic Inc.

Pasadena, California

Jun 2016 — Apr 2022

For six years, I focused on the user interface, user experience, and accessibility issues for a spectrum of custom software projects delivered through the Internet or mobile devices.

My fully remote coworker teams varied in size from 1 to 16, depending on project scope and budget. Quality communication between everyone was—and always is—key to the success of all projects. This work environment has been critical in helping me refine my skills in producing deliverables on schedule, running remote meetings, and managing and presenting to clients online.

My work at Art+Logic has made me a far better listener, questioner, designer, and producer of work on target with project goals and of high quality.

Senior Web & Email Designer

AGIA

Carpinteria, California

Oct 2013 — Sep 2015

I focused on improving user experience and campaign effectiveness by designing more intelligent, responsive digital marketing efforts using email, landing pages, and “funnels.” The emails were customized and tailored by user behavior to deliver relevant content, producing measurable improvements in engagement.

I improved several campaigns' engagement by more than 25% through design and iteration over several email efforts. I executed A/B and multivariate testing to improve performance. Most campaigns included strategic planning, product and user research, visual design, fully responsive email, landing page coding—desktop, mobile, and tablet—and a robust analytics strategy, including implementation, testing, and reporting.
